Ascent

Overview

The hard part! Just as fundamental as descent, ascent is the more physically demanding act of getting up the ropes. Typically carried out using a chest ascender and hand ascender with a foot loop on the working line.

Important Considerations

Method

  1. Ensure there are no tangles in the working and back-up ropes

  2. Attach the back-up device to the back-up line, function check and then place in a high position

  3. Attach the chest ascender to the working rope and pull down on the rope be low the device to reduce stretch and slack

  4. Attach the hand ascender to the working rope above the chest ascender and ready the foot loop

  5. With one foot in the foot loop, place hands on hand ascender or on the rope above and stand in the foot loop –the rope should fall through the chest as cender as you stand

  6. If the working rope does not fall through the chest ascender, grip the rope below it with one hand and pull through

  7. Each time progress is made on the working rope, the back-up device should be managed and maintained in a high position

  8. Move the hand ascender up the working rope, and repeat step 5-7.
